NSFAS 2025 Funding Applications: Off to a Smooth Start

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) officially opened applications for the 2025 academic year on September 20, 2024, providing students from disadvantaged backgrounds a chance to apply for financial aid at public institutions of higher learning. The application process aims to ensure that students have the opportunity to pursue their education without financial burden.

Early Success: Over 289,000 Applications Received

Since the opening of the application period, NSFAS has received a remarkable 289,020 applications from students seeking financial aid for 2025. Of these:

• 195,334 SASSA beneficiaries have been provisionally approved for funding.
• 58,158 applications are still under evaluation.
• 35,561 applications have been withdrawn.
• 1,807 applications were unsuccessful, often due to incomplete or incorrect information.

The following is a breakdown of the number of applications submitted across South Africa:

• North West: 7,527 applications
• Mpumalanga: 12,531 applications
• Western Cape: 7,704 applications
• Northern Cape: 1,108 applications
• Eastern Cape: 16,390 applications
• Free State: 7,108 applications
• KwaZulu-Natal: 36,384 applications
• Gauteng: 38,505 applications
• Limpopo: 25,155 applications

These numbers reflect the nationwide interest and the critical role that NSFAS plays in enabling access to higher education.

Important Application Information

NSFAS has highlighted that the consent form is mandatory for all non-SASSA beneficiaries. This document is required to allow NSFAS to verify the income of applicants’ households and to process the application effectively.

Early Application Encouraged

NSFAS urges students who are currently in Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 to apply early and not wait until their final results or the closing date. The application process is designed to be seamless and user-friendly, allowing applicants to create a myNSFAS profile, complete their personal information, upload the required documents, and submit their applications without delay.

The appointment of Mr. Sithembiso Freeman Nomvalo as the NSFAS Administrator was made effective on April 11, 2024, under the authority of Section 17A to 17D of the NSFAS Act, as published in Government Gazette No. 50482 by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr. BE Nzimande.
