The Rail Cadet Scheme is a programme aimed at high performing school learners (Grade 12) from socially disadvantaged communities.

Successful learners will be identified and developed in the Engineering / Technical and Operations environment.

Qualifying criteria: 

• Good performance in Mathematics and/or Science • Overall good performance on all subjects for the academic year • SA Citizenship Public schools in and around the Transnet Railway Network are invited to apply to be considered for participation in this programme.

Schools in the following areas will be given preference: Durban, Richards Bay, Phalaborwa, Musina, Lephalale, Polokwane, Saldanha, Kimberley, Sishen, East London, Postmasburg, Port Elizabeth, Ladysmith, Newcastle, Vereeniging, Bloemfontein, Mafikeng and Zeerust.

Qualifying schools are requested to submit applications for participation in the programme.

Applications should include a profile of the school as well as profiles of individual learners. Supporting documentation concerning individual learners should also be submitted i.e. academic records and a copy of the learner’s identity document. Successful schools will be visited by a Transnet Freight Rail delegation to meet prospective candidates. It will also be expected that schools present profiles of learners to the TFR delegation.   Selection of learners will be aligned to the Transnet Freight Rail Employment Equity Policy and Plan.

Preference will be given to African females and learners with disabilities.
