ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – NRF

NRF Scholarship at UJ; The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, is an independent statutory body established through the National Research Foundation Act (Act No 23 of 1998) and is the intermediary agency between the policies and strategies of the Government of South Africa and South Africa’s research institutions.

The NRF awards scholarships under the ambit of the South African Research Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is a public university, formed in 2005 after a merger between 3 institutions: the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR), and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University.

ABOUT THE NRF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The NRF (National Research Foundation) invites students to apply for scholarship funding, for the 2023 academic year. The NRF scholarship will be awarded for Ph.D. and MA studies in Visual Arts, at the University of Johannesburg, under the supervision of Prof Brenda Schmahmann (the SARChI Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture).

Prof Schmahmann will support and supervise visual art candidates, whose research aligns broadly with one of the following research rubrics:

Art and Design in the Context of Community Projects
Gender and Visual Culture
Public Art, Curation, and the Politics of Representation in the Public Domain

MORE ABOUT THE SAMSTIP BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE, SERVICE CONTRACT & SELECTION

The value of the bursary awards is as follows:

Master of Arts studies: full funding to the value of R162 900 per annum for 2 years (and an R10 000 study device) or partial funding to the value of R105 900 per annum for 2 years
Ph.D. studies: full funding to the value of R170 430 per annum for 3 years (and an R10 000 study device) or partial funding to the value of R94 430 per annum for 3 years

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NRF SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

You must be a South African citizen
You must be from a designated group (African, Coloured, or Indian)
You must have achieved a minimum result of 65% for your previous degree
You must intend on studying towards a Ph.D. or MA degree in Visual Arts, within one of the research rubrics stated above
You must intend on studying at the University of Johannesburg, in 2023
Ph.D. applicants: you must NOT be older than 32 years at the time of applying for funding
Ph.D. applicants: you must complete your studies in a maximum period of 3 years
MA degree applicants: you must NOT be older than 30 years at the time of applying for funding
MA degree applicants: you must complete your studies in a maximum period of 2 years
Full funding will be awarded if:
- you have a total family income of less than R350 000 per annum OR
- you have achieved a minimum result of 75% for your previous degree or you will receive a minimum result of 75% for the degree you are completing in 2022 OR
- you are living with a disability

Applicants who Prof Schmahmann selects will be invited to fill in an online application on the NRF site thereafter.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

The official academic record of courses completed at universities and results achieved (on institutions letterhead)
