ABOUT THE COMPANY – MEAT INDUSTRY TRUST (MIT)

The Meat Industry Trust (MIT) is a discretionary Trust that was formed in 1996, with the aim of funding various objectives of interest relating to the Red Meat Industry.

The Meat Industry Trust (MIT) bursary is administered via the Bursary Working Committee (BWC), which includes a team of people who represent the research fraternity and interests of the industry, and have knowledge about the Tertiary Institutions.

ABOUT THE MEAT INDUSTRY TRUST (MIT) BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The Meat Industry Trust (MIT) is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2022 academic year. The bursary will cover Postgraduate studies (Master’s or Doctorate degree), relating to at least 1 of the following fields:

  • Consumer Health & Acceptance
  • Economics / Marketing
  • Environment
  • Genetics / Genomics / Breeding
  • Health / Bio-security / Welfare
  • Hygiene / Product Safety & Quality
  • Nutrition
  • Production / Management
  • Rangeland / Pasture
  • Reproduction
  • Slaughter / Carcass

The field(s) of study must be with regard to the following red meat species: Cattle / Goats / Pigs / Sheep.
The aim of the MIT bursary is to enhance the SA red meat industry scientifically, through research related to the improvement, production, manufacturing, processing, storing or marketing of red meat or red meat products, livestock welfare, and supports the development of human capital.

The bursary will be awarded based on 2 main criteria:
1) Academic record and scientific quality of the project proposal
2) Contribution the project and acquired expertise could make to the South African red meat industry

MORE ABOUT THE MEAT INDUSTRY TRUST BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & RENEWABILITY

The bursary will be awarded to the value of R60 000 per annum, which will be paid in 2 instalments. The final value of the scholarship is R120 000 for 2 consecutive years, for Master’s Degree studies and R180 000 for 3 consecutive years, for Doctor’s Degree studies.

The bursary is awarded for 1 academic year at a time, and is renewable each year based on satisfactory academic performance.

Bursary recipients will be required to submit annual progress reports, which will then be evaluated by the BWC, to confirm if students may proceed with the study.

Final selection will take place within 1 month of the closing date, at a meeting of the Bursary Working Committee. All applicants will receive feedback on their application soon after the meeting.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MEAT INDUSTRY TRUST (MIT) BURSARY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must have completed a 4 year degree, at a recognised tertiary institution in South Africa
  • You must intend on studying full-time towards a master’s or doctorate degree in 2022
  • You must study at a recognised tertiary institution in South Africa
  • You must meet the criteria at your selected tertiary institution, for your master’s or doctorate degree
  • You must NOT be employed
  • You must agree to all the terms and conditions on the application form
  • Candidates with other bursaries may apply, however the details of bursaries applied for and awarded must be declared, as well as any conditions that may conflict with this bursary

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • ID document or Passport (certified copy)
  • Passport sized photograph (head and shoulders only)
  • All tertiary qualifications (certified copy)
  • Full academic record for each qualification relating to your application (on university letterhead)

Note: each document must be labelled in the following format: “your full name; document name” and must be in pdf format.
