Lockdown: 11 Killed, 44 Injured In Ogun Road Accidents
The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps have said 11 persons died while 44 others sustained injuries in various road crashes in the state since the commencement of lockdown between April 4 and May 8.
The Public Relations Officer of the Corps, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed this on Monday in a statement he issued in Abeokuta.
Akinbiyi explained that during the period, the command apprehended 345 road traffic offenders throughout the state during the ongoing COVID- 19 lockdown ordered by the Federal and Ogun State Governments.
He also disclosed that the TRACE Corps turned back a total of 972 vehicles at various border towns in the state during the ongoing lockdown.
Giving the breakdown, Akinbiyi said 41 road crashes recorded within the period involved 15 private cars, 11 private buses, 18 commercial cars, two motorcycles, 12 commercial buses, four medium trucks, and five heavy trucks.
According to Akinbiyi, out of the reported 41 crashes, eight of them were fatal, 20 were serious crashes while the remaining 13 were minor crashes.
He said, “During this period 212 persons were involved in the road traffic crashes, out of which 44 persons; comprising 30 males and 14 females sustained various degrees of injuries.
“Eleven persons; comprising 10 adult males and one female child were killed while 157 persons were rescued unhurt.”
Akinbiyi added that 46.31 per cent of the crashes were caused by speed, 24.40 per cent caused by dangerous driving, 8.64 per cent caused by bad tyres, 7.28 per cent were caused by driving against traffic and 13.37 per cent by other causes.
He said the report was witnessed by TRACE Corps in the areas it covered only.
Akinbiyi reiterated that the decision to reduce deaths and injuries on all roads in the state was being pursued vigorously and relentlessly such that no traffic offender shall go unpunished.
