ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – LMI

Labour Market Intelligence LMI Bursary South Africa | The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation initiated the first phase of the labour market intelligence research programme in 2012 – the Labour Market Intelligence Partnership (LMIP) led by the Human Sciences Research Council. The second phase of the Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) research programme was initiated in 2019, in partnership with the Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU) at UCT.

The LMI research programme is a 5-year multi-stakeholder programme funded through the National Skills Fund (NSF), aimed at establishing a credible institutional mechanism for skills planning.

ABOUT THE LMI RESEARCH BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), partnered with the Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), is inviting students to apply for the Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) research programme, for the 2023 academic year.. The bursary is being implemented by the DHET, along with the DPRU (a university-accredited research unit within the School of Economics at UCT).

The bursary is aimed at Master’s and PhD students, who wish to grow their research expertise in the area of labour market intelligence. Applicants must intend on pursuing qualitative or quantitative research broadly in the area of the labour market and skills development (the degree should be based in economics, post-schooling education, sociology or a similar discipline).

MORE ABOUT THE LMI RESEARCH BURSARY PROGRAMME – VALUE AND SELECTION

Bursaries will be awarded to 4 recipients – 2 for Masters’s studies and 2 for PhD studies.

The bursary will be awarded for the full duration of the study (2 years for Master’s students and 3 years for PhD students) and will be awarded to the value of R80 000 per annum.

Applicants should note that completed dissertations may be fed into the system and published as LMI programme outputs.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within 2 months of the closing date – if you do not receive any feedback by 30 September 2022, please regard your application as unsuccessful.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE LMI RESEARCH BURSARY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must have been accepted to study towards a full-time Master’s or Doctoral qualification in 2022
  • You must have been accepted to study at one of these public institutions: the University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Rhodes University, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Fort Hare, University Limpopo, University of Venda, Walter Sisulu University, University of Zululand, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Sefako Makgatho Health Science University
  • You must be able to graduate by the end of the funding period (no later than 31 December 2024)
  • You must NOT have completed any previous degrees to the level at which you are currently enrolled at
  • You must NOT be receiving NSFAS or NRF funding
  • You must NOT be receiving funding from any other bursary or scholarship from a governmental organization
  • Preference will be given to candidates who: have a good communication and writing skills in English, have a track record of accomplishment in their research, have appropriate analytical and empirical skills, and have the ability for independent study, research design and implementation
  • Preference will be given to African candidates, female candidates and candidates with disabilities

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE LMI RESEARCH BURSARY

Candidates can apply by submitting clear copies of the following supporting documentation (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • A completed LMI Bursary cover sheet and checklist (.pdf)
  • Application letter, which should summarise your research interests, experience and proposed research plan. The letter must outline the topic you will pursue, have details on how you will undertake the research, explain how it is relevant, and state why you feel it would be useful to the sector (maximum 2 pages)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Academic transcripts, certificates or result sheet per semester (certified copy)
  • Written work example (maximum 5 pages)
  • 2 referees who have been directly involved in your current or previous academic research (their names and email addresses)
