Judgment For Student Accused of NSFAS Theft Postponed
The Walter Sisulu University student who has been accused of theft after mistakenly receiving millions in funding from NSFAS is soon due to receive a verdict on her case, which has proceeded for three years.
Judgment in the case of the Walter Sisulu University student Sibongile Mani, who accidentally received R14 million in funds from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, has been postponed in the East London regional court to 14 December to allow the accused to write her exams.
Mani faces charges of theft after she allegedly spent over R800 000 out of the R14 million that was mistakenly allocated to her by NSFAS in 2018.
Although the judge was ready to hand down the judgment on Wednesday, her lawyer Asanda Pakade applied for a postponement, stating that his client was not in court because she was studying for exams.
Regional Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Anelisa Ncakani says that although the postponement application was unexpected they did not oppose it, despite being prepared to continue with the trial.
“Of course, we are a bit disappointed because we were ready to proceed with our case and for the judgment to proceed in court today, but she brought in an application and we did not oppose it because we are also aware of her wellbeing and development”
She adds that it would have been more preferable for them to inform the court of this during her last appearance, but they were well within their right to lodge the application.
Mani is currently pursuing studies in Education but was an accounting student at the time of the alleged incident.
