Gates Cambridge International Scholarship | The University of Cambridge is a public collegiate research university, located in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

The Gates Cambridge International Scholarship was created in 2000 through a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge. With a donation value of $210 million, this was the largest single donation ever received by a UK university. Thereafter, the first class of scholars began their residence in 2001, and since then, Gated and Cambridge have been enriching the lives of many young individuals through valuable education.

ABOUT THE GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The University of Cambridge is inviting students to apply for the Gates Cambridge International Scholarship programme, for the 2022/ 2024 academic year.

The scholarship bursary is aimed at students from outside of the UK wanting to pursue postgraduate studies in any subject available at the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom.

About two-thirds of the award will be given to PhD students. Twenty-five of those awards will be granted to candidates in the US and the remaining 55 to candidates from other countries.

Each year Gates Cambridge awards full-cost scholarships to 80 applicants from outside the UK. Approximately two-thirds of these awards will be offered to PhD students, with approximately 25 awards available in the US round and 55 available in the International round.

The scholarship is awarded based on 4 main criteria: outstanding intellectual ability, reasons for the choice, of course, a commitment to improving the lives of others and leadership potential.

MORE ABOUT THE GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – EXPENSES COVERED

The Gates Cambridge International Scholarship will cover the following expenses:

  • Full tuition fees at the University of Cambridge
  • Immigration Health Surcharge
  • Inbound Visa costs
  • Maintenance allowance for a single student (an amount of £18 744 for 12 months at the 2022/2022 rate; the pro-rate for courses that are less than a year. PhD students will be funded up to 4 years.)
  • A single economy airfare (one for the beginning and another for the end of your course)
  • University composition fee (the compensation fee varies from student to student. Applicants are encouraged to look at the Graduate Studies Prospectus for further details. Should the student gain a fee award from public authorities (such as UKRI) they are encouraged to accept this instead.

Expenses covered on a discretionary basis:

  • Academic development funding (£500 – £2000) depending on the length of your course (this will be used to attend conferences and courses)
  • Family allowance (up to £10 944 for one child and £15 612 for two or more)
  • Fieldwork: you can opt to keep your regular maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD (The Trust does NOT fund other fieldwork, this should be funded by your University compensation fee)
  • Hardship funding for unforeseen circumstances
  • Maternity/ paternity funding, if necessary (You may apply to pause your studies for up to 6 months and receive your maintenance allowance during this period)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP

Applications must be submitted online via the University’s Graduate Application Portal:

  • The admission section of the application is where you are applying to a specific graduate course and a College place. Applicants must provide their personal details, academic background, plans and suitability for the proposed course.
  • The funding section of the application will allow applicants to apply for a range of funding opportunities.

When applying for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship you will be asked to provide the following:

  • A statement explaining your reason for applying for the scholarship and how you meet the main criteria (approximately 500 words)
  • Research proposal (PhD applicants)
  • A reference

ADDITIONAL NOTES ABOUT THE GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP

  • Applicants should visit watch the video of the Gates Cambridge International Scholarship application process, on the University’s website.
  • For October 2022 entry, Gates Cambridge is looking at a scheme that allows candidates wanting to pursue a part-time Doctoral degree to apply for funding.
  • There are two application deadlines, depending on which course you are applying for. Be sure to apply for the Graduate Funding Competition deadline.
  • The Departmental Ranking will commence from December 2022 to February 2022.
  • Applicants will be notified about the outcome of their application by 3 March 2022.
  • The review and selection by the panel of judges will commence in March 2022.
  • Scholarships will be awarded at the end of March 2022.
  • All scholarships should be accepted within 72 hours of being offered.
