ABOUT THE COMPANY – RHODES UNIVERSITY & ADA AND BERTIE LEVENSTEIN
Ada And Bertie Levenstein Bursary South Africa | Rhodes University was first established in 1904 and today is known as a leading South African University in academic excellence. Located in Grahamstown, Makhanda, Rhodes is a small university with over 8200 students. The university is proud to have maintained a high distinction and undergraduate/ graduate pass rate as well as the top ‘research output per academic staff member’.
Rhodes is also proud of receiving the largest bequest from a single donor, Mr Elias Bertrand Levistein and Ada Levenstein- as such, the Ada and Bertie Levenstein Bursary Programme was established. Bertie and Ada Levinstein were very passionate about education and learning and throughout their lives, they were benefactors to many individuals in need. The aim of the bursary programme is to give individuals who do not have the financial means the chance to embark on their tertiary studies at Rhodes University. The university is grateful for the donation of this programme as it ensures that candidate’s from poor, rural, and working-class backgrounds may have the opportunity to benefit from educational experiences and qualifications. The Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University, Dr Mabizla, has made it his personal mission to ensure that academically talented individuals who face financial need will not be turned away from the university’s doors and may have the opportunity to study with the aid of the Ada and Levenstein programme.
ABOUT THE RHODES UNIVERSITY ADA & BERTIE LEVENSTEIN BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
Rhodes University is inviting postgraduate students, to apply for the Ada & Bertie Levenstein Bursary programme, for the 2022 academic year.
This bursary will be awarded for studies at Rhodes University, towards an Honours, Masters or Doctoral degree in ANY field of intellectual or creative study.
Students with an outstanding academic record and in need of financial assistance may apply.
MORE ABOUT THE RHODES UNIVERSITY ADA & BERTIE LEVENSTEIN BURSARY PROGRAMME – OBLIGATIONS
The successful candidate will be required to complete and be available for examination in all coursework and thesis aspects of their selected degree, within the period of support.
The candidate is also expected to look into the publication of any novel project work that surfaces during the programme and publish novel research findings of the work that was taken on during the bursary period.
The candidate is expected to publish this in a ‘bursary journal’ either during or shortly after their programme period. The publication from the candidate must acknowledge the financial support they received from the Ada & Bertie Levenstein Bursary and must be published under full affiliation to Rhodes University.
MORE ABOUT THE RU ADA & BERTIE LEVENSTEIN BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE, RENEWAL & SELECTION
The value of the bursary will be dependent on the year of study:
- Honours programme: R100 000
- Masters Programme: R100 000
- Doctoral programme: R120 000
The value may be revised by the university to meet the inflationary increases each year. Bursaries are awarded for 1 academic year at a time – funding for continuous years, such as Masters and Doctoral, will be awarded based on the upkeep of excellent academic performance and the candidate’s ability to complete the degree in the expected time frame.
Shortlisted candidates will be assessed by a committee (which includes the Director of Research (Chair), Faculty Deans, Department Heads, as well as academic experts) – final assessment may include referees reports or an interview.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ADA & BERTIE LEVENSTEIN
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must be 26 years old or younger at the beginning of the 2022 academic year (funding for successive years may be granted for candidates older than 26 years)
- You must be studying or intend on studying full-time towards an Honours, Masters or Doctoral qualification
- You must be studying or intend on studying within ANY field of study (preference will be given to students pursuing studies within the Science field)
- You must be studying or intend on studying at Rhodes University
- You must have proven financial support
- You must have an excellent academic record

- Academic Curriculum Vitae
- Full academic record/ transcripts, including most recent transcripts (on institutions letterhead)
- Motivational letter to support your application (short letter)
- Proof of application for or letter of support from the Department concerning your studies, if a new RU student
- Brief research proposal: Masters and PhD students
- Report from your supervisor regarding your academic progress: Masters and PhD students
- Parents/ guardians proof of income
