One Hundred and Fifty-six persons have been convicted for allegedly violating the curfew order imposed by the Niger State Government to check the transmission of COVID-19 in the state.
Out of the figure, fifteen other persons were discharged on the grounds of ill-health and delivery of essential services.
The suspects were arrested by security agents from various parts of Minna.
The offenders include a trailer carrying rice and forty-one passengers from Kano to Lagos state and some other persons from Mokwa in Niger State travelling to Gombe State.
The state counsel, Barr. Jibrin Kudu Alfa while arraigning the suspects before the Mobile Court said they were charged under the Niger State COVID-19 Executive Order 2020.
They were sentenced to various jail terms ranging from twelve to one month(s) in prison with options of a fine ranging from N10,000 to N1000 respectively.
The mobile court session held at the Imani Junction Shiroro and Trade Fair Complex in Minna was jointly presided over by Magistrates Murtala Ibrahim and Halima Mohammed where the accused were arraigned.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Health Dr Muhammad Muhammad Makusidi directed that the violators of the lockdown order from other states to be accompanied by law enforcement agents to the exit point of the state.
He noted the need for them to return to their states to curb the spread of the pandemic.
