About Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design
The Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design was founded by Nanda Soobben in 1994.   Nanda studied at the Parson’s School of Design in New York and has exhibited in San Francisco, New York and South Africa. He is an internationally acclaimed artist, who has won numerous awards and whose work includes political cartoons, portraiture, painting, satirical journalism and social commentary.   In 2010 The Durban University of Technology awarded him an honorary doctorate for his significant contributions to our society.   Why CFAD is unique?   What makes CFAD unique, is that it enables students to undertake a general but integrated study of Fine Art, Animation and Graphic Design. The defined focus is on meeting industry needs through a creative and integrated curriculum of these three disciplines.   The course aims to promote and nurture a passion for the arts, especially amongst learners from previously disadvantaged sectors, developing their skills capacity to foster employability and SMME empowerment.   CFAD is one of four institutions in South Africa which MAPPP SETA (Media Advertising Publishing Printing Packaging Sector Education Training Authority) is judged to be an institute of excellence.   Our Mission To be an innovative and leading service provider in fine art, animation, graphic design and multi-media with a defined focus on meeting industry needs through the creative combination of these disciplines. To promote and nurture a passion for the arts especially amongst learners from previously disadvantaged sectors, developing skills to foster employability and entrepreneurship.   To provide students with the latest technology in graphic design, animation, multi-media and visual arts.   Other Student Activities   Community Service CFAD students often extend a helping hand to poor and disadvantaged communities, offering their time and skills. Every year students work with NGOs, NPOs, or activists, on a Bootcamp. This involves the first, second and third-year students collaborating on a project to provide design and media solutions for a client’s requirements.   Competitions   CFAD students are especially invited to enter leading fine art, design and animation competitions. Workshops are held to introduce and ready the students for the creative process.   Guest Workshops   CFAD invites prominent artists and industry professionals to spend time with the students, to share their knowledge, expertise, and experiences.
