Abia State Ministry of Environment and its Statutory function
MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT
(a) MANDATE:
To keep Abia State and its environs clean for healthy living and habitation
(b) VISION:
To serve as the primary vehicle for the execution of Government plans and programmes towards the rapid environmental transformation of Abia State for sustainable development.
(c) MISSION:
Our mission is to formulate policies and co-ordinate action on environmental protection and conservation of natural resources for sustainable development.
(d) ORGANIZATION CHART:
The Ministry’s Comprehensive Organizational Chart is herein attached.
(e) STATUTORY FUNCTIONS:
The statutory functions and responsibilities of the Ministry of Environment as enunciated in the National Policy on Environment are as follows:
(i) Co-ordination of environmental protection and natural resources conservation for
sustainable development.
(ii) Securing quality environment adequate for good health and well being.
(iii) Promotion of sustainable natural resources and forest reserves.
(iv)Restoration and maintenance of the eco-system and preservation of bio-diversity.
(v)Raising of public awareness and promotion of understanding of linkages between
environment and development, and
(vi) Co-operation with Government bodies and international organizations on
environmental matters,
(vii) Flood and erosion control.
(viii) Pollution Control and Environmental Health.
(f) STRUCTURE OF THE MINISTRY:
The structure of the Ministry of Environment into two as follows:
(i) COMMON SERVICES DEPARTMENT CONSISTING OF
(a) Administration
(b) Finance
(c) Planning, Research and Statistics
(ii) TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT CONSISTING OF:
(a) Forestry
(b) Pollution Control and environmental Heal
(c) Erosion and flood Control
(d) Conservation Unit
(iii) PARASTATAL(S):
(a) Abia state Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA)
Q) TOURIST SITES:
Arrangements are on top gear to establish the Abia State Zoological Garden and to bring the animals that are still in the custody of Imo State Government back to Abia State.
(h) MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOAL (MDGs)
The Ministry is aware of “Environment” being at the apex of Millennium Development Goals {MDG)- It is pertinent to assert that the. Ministry’s ongoing operations and activities are, therefore, in conformity with global efforts towards countering negative challenges of climatic change. These activities include but not limited to:
(a) Raising of and distribution of a variety of seedlings for afforestation purposes.
(b) Pollution Control & Environmental Sanitation.
(c) Desilting, Waste disposal Water Channeling and Drainage construction.
(d) Erosion/Flood Control and Watershed Management.
